Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
